Religion and Dowsing
Now I know that there are various arguments for and against dowsing from a religious point of view. Some say that dowsing is a gift from God while others talk of it as though it were the work of the Devil.
In order to help settle this difficult dilemma, who better to turn to than a minister of the church who also dowses?
Yes, such a person exists. His name is Dee Whitaker. The whole story is set in Kentucky and is reported in The Ledger (and can be found here).
He seems to be a most interesting man…
‘Dee has been summoned by farmers, contractors and other’s who have needed his assistance and have been amazed by his accuracy.
Whitaker uses a green “forked switch” to detect elements underground.
“A dead stick won’t work,” he said.
He prefers to use a switch from an elm tree — it’s tough and won’t break. However, switches from peach and willow trees will also do the trick.’
His take on the whole phenomenon is that he has been granted a gift by a higher power. Interestingly enough, he says he was unable to do any dowsing while his father was alive. His father could dowse and Dee feels that the gift was passed on to him when his father died.
He can also stop bleeding and has an antidote for burns. He is quite the talent because not only can he do these things (and there are plenty of citizens to testify to this), but he is a former Robertson County jailer and is currently a Robertson County magistrate. He is also the preacher at the New Corinth Church of Christ on Oakland Road in Mt. Olivet.
Now, it seems to me that if a man of the cloth, a preacher, can do these things, it would seem to end any further arguments about whether dowsing (or ‘water-witching’ as it is also known) is the work of the devil or not. What should not be inferred from all this however is that dowsing is somehow sanctified by being associated with the church.
The truth is that dowsing is a natural human ability and the more people learn it and practice it the better as far as I’m concerned.
