Itchy palms and hot ears
My mother used to say that whenever her left palm itched, she was going to receive money. If it was her right palm, then she was going to be spending money. Unfortunately, I never found out if she was correct. Does anyone have the same notion? I saw this post in another blog and that was what got me started thinking.
She was also one for taking signs seriously. For example, if her ear got hot, it was, she said, because someone was talking about her. In that case, she would moisten her finger and thumb and rub them on the offending earlobe saying, “That’ll make them dribble”. Again, I’d love to know why she though that would work.
I’m sure she had other foibles, but I can’t remember them at the moment. If anyone else has similar ideas, I’d love to hear of them. They must have originated because they were useful in some way. I can’t, for the life of me, see how though.

yes to the ichy palm. i learned it from my grandmother and mother. it never failed. nor does it with me……i don’t know why either. we also had an ear thing happen…..but if our right ear was buzzying, some one was talking good about us. left ear buzzying gossip- and we’d say close your mouth busy body. and sure enough in a day or less we would hear the fact
of what was being said, good or bad……..
aother thing we use to do is if we droped a knife, it ment a man would come calling to visit. a fork , a women. a spoon ment a child would come
visting, usually with an adult……one time i droped a whole hand full of silver wear. a bounch of people from out of town would come from a far to visit, reletives….
Hey! That’s really neat!! I don’t think I’ve found anywhere that you can really find out about these things. I’m sure that there are plenty of people out there with similar stories to tell. It would be great to hear them and see if there’s some sort of correlation between them.
Unfortunately, as I said in the post, I never really found out if such things worked for my mother. It’s good that you had confirmation.
Anyone else??
I too was brought up on these intuitive thoughts, re itchy palms and hot ears.
I have one to add to this, when I am ignoring the obvious, (whatever I’m working on ), I have a sensation of being tapped on the head very lightly and know that I am on the right track, I am only just learning to recognise this, but when I do pay attention it works and it saves me a whole lot of time.
Anyone else get this, I haven’t heard of it before.
No, I haven’t heard of this one, but it’s always interesting to hear of new ways that people have of listening to their intuition.
Thanks for the information.
And I’ll add my request…
Anyone else with other strange stories of things like this?
Hi..I was also brought up with various ideas like this. My Grandmother and some of my sisters were all psychic. I have to admit to not really listening conciously as I was growing up…I had my own experiences to contend with. However when someone in my family who has passed wants to get my attention, they touch my face. If it is just to say hi or I love you…then it is just once or twice. If I`m supposed to listen then they tap insistently and I get a tingling a bit like pins and needles. If it is from a guide I get a sharp feeling in my ear. Either ear…or the lights will flash.
just a few thoughts

Tingling, flashing lights, tapping on the head, dropping cutlery… This is all good stuff!!
Anymore out there? I think we haven’t even begun to touch on the many ways we get ‘messages”.
Yes I grew up hearing these things about the itchy palms, the silverware and being directed with a tap, nudge or whack in the head. I still look down and try to determine what direction the silverware is pointing to figure which direction the visit will be from. My mother would always refer to these things as being from her grandmother. I would have loved to meet her grandmother and learned her wisdom!
She (my mother) is religious, and insists that she’s not superstitious. Consults the almanac for everything from cutting toenails and hair, painting, planting, putting up fence, going to the doctor, and buying a car…. I wish I completely understood the system. Although I know it involves a lot of faith and gratitude toward a higher power.
Moms intuition is uncanny, and I could go on and on.
Peace,
Kiachu
Hmmmm…interesting about the almanac part of it. I grew up being around Old Moore’s Almanac in the UK, although I don’t remember anyone actually using it, just occasionally looking at it. Maybe they read it when I was asleep!!
I think, for some people, there is a line you mustn’t cross if you consider yourself religious, so you never admit to superstition: you’re just being religious with an interest in other things…
Hey ho
Thanks for this one…
And the next?
Hi.
Yes, I’ve heard some of those here in Eastern Canada, a region alive with “traditions” and “superstition.” My mother has one that says if your nose is itchy, you will have an arguement with someone. Also, if a visitor leaves by a different door than the one they entered, that means others (usually strangers) will arrive soon. As for Ria’s comments regarding those who have passed, I only get visits from my father and only when I’m doing something he approves of. I feel a chill on my shoulders, like he has his arm around me and I get a sense of serenity. But I also get excited, because I know I’m on the right track with my thoughts or projects.
Regards!
Thanks, Lonnie. I remember somethgin vaguely about having an itchy nose from my mother, but can’t recall what it was. As for being visited, I can remember my grandfather came to me once. Definite pipe tobacco smell (in a non-smoking house) and just a ‘knowingness’ that it was him. But it was only the once. No more than that.
Again, thanks for the input on this. I wonder if anyone else knows about the itchy nose thing?
Hi Nigel,
This was the saying about the nose itching. My nose itches, I smell peaches, yonder comes_______________ with a hole in their britches. That meant that who ever you thought of first would be your visitor.
I also grew up with the saying that if a bird gets in your house that there was going to be a death of a person you knew.
and if you dream of a baby being born it meant someone would die, and if you dream of someone dying, there was going to be a birth of some one close to you.
There is a system about the almanac..it involves the sign of the zodiac and the phases of the moon. If you cut your hair on the grow of the moon it will grow longer faster, but if you cut it on the new of the moon it will grow thicker. If you cut it on the shrink of the moon it will not grow fast. If you know your signs you can do anything by the phases of the moon.
Just a few add on
Thanks

Interesting, Carol! Another twist on the same theme.
I vaguely remember about a bird in the house but I haven’t come across the idea of birth and death being reversed in dreams before. I wonder who else has heard of this?
The almanac thing is whole new area to explore. I might try and do an article or two about that at some time, when I can figure out the angle and how it relates to intuition directly.
Fascinating stuff. Thanks.
Hi folks, I’ve been reading all your stories and have heard of a lot of them, my mom used to say that these kind of things are superstitous old wives tales, however I remember she would throw salt over her left shoulder if she spilt any, “for luck” she would say.
My husband gets a sensation on his face as if he has walked into a cobwebb and also a sensation around his ears as if being lightly touched, this we are told is his loved ones trying to let him know they are close.
My father in spirit comes to visit and I get a feeling of him standing behind me I am comforted to know that they are still around watching out for us.
The thought is that young children can see spirit and I beleive this to be so, recently my grand gaughter of six months was sitting on my lap and she was acknowledging a presence beside us, she continued this for several minutes and we were all stunned into silence watching her respond in the manner she does when we are talking to her.
Regards
The thing which I find most interesting is the origin of these ‘old wives tales’. It sounds a pretty derogatory label which tends to make me think that the original versions of them were very powerful, or at least, were incredibly effective. As society or culture changed, so these beliefs became belittled.
I’m not sure if I have written elsewhere about my grandfather. Several years after he died, I suddenly smelt his pipe smoke (I was in a non-smoking house) and was totally convinced that he was smiling at me.
And, yes, I am equally positive about young children. They haven’t had the barriers built up for them yet…
Thanks, Carol. Your second post I see. Keep ‘em coming is what I say!
what does it mean when your left earlobe is hot & itching
Well, assuming this is not something to do with a purely physical problem, my best guess would be that it is your body’s way of telling you something about your hearing….maybe not hearing what you want / need to? Maybe someone is trying to tell you something and you just don’t pay attention??
Whatever it is, the physical thing is attracting your attention…for a reason.
Just another thought, instead of it being about hearing others, might it be to do with hearing yourself? Not saying something, holding back from speaking about something, something like that?
In these sorts of cases,as you can see from the stories above, these physical things tend to have a purely personal side to them. My mother ‘making people dribble’ for example, was I’m quite sure, something personal to her and would have meant something else to another person.
Sorry to be vague, but perhaps these might spark ideas in you??
Do let us know, if you find out. I, for one, would be most happy to hear what it meant for you!
I remember this one! If you find a penny laying on heads pick it up and put it in your pocket for luck, if you find it on tails turn it over and leave it for the next person.
Well, I’ve heard of picking up coins (naturally!), but I never heard of looking at which side was facing you.
It’s actually quite a nice, friendly, helpful idea, isn’t it? The next person coming along gets it (assuming you don’t cheat!!).
Have you ever turned the coin and walked away?
Hello everyone,
This is my first post to this website.
I have had a wonderful time reading all about the “Old Wives Tales and I have heard of most of them.
I guess I am revisiting all of these types of things owing to my recent introduction to Spirituality, Courses in Dowsing, Intuition, etc. I am a really late bloomer, but am so excited to be involved in all of it.
I have just recently been experiencing the itchy ear syndrome. I mean itching to the point of it becoming a real nuisance. After reading all of your comments, I guess I had bettter pay attention because someone must be trying to tell me a whole bunch of things, ha, ha.
I guess all I have to say about all I have read this morning is - “Pay attention because someone or something is tgrying to get your attention.
Since I have started paying attention and listening some really wonderful things have happened to me and my family so listen to those itches, scratches and most importantly; those feelings.
Have a nice day.
Yes, George, I think the whole thing, all of these comments are really only pointing to one thing….being (or becoming) self- aware.
Without that awareness, nothing is going to get through anyway. An itch will be just an itch and never anything more.
And, after all, self-awareness is what intuition is all about, isn’t it?
Thanks for the post, George. Good luck!
This is my first time visiting your blog and i must say i like it very much.
Your post was an educationa read.
I will surely check back here more often!
