What it isn’t
I’ve written a lot of posts which talk about how to access your intuition, or how people use it, or theories they have about it. You have probably got a lot of ideas about intuition as well. But I think that it might all tend to be one-sided. I think that maybe we’re getting the wrong image of what intuition really is.
Despite the attraction of such things, intuition is not hearing voices, or reading tarot cards or knowing who is on the phone before you pick it up. Those are just the symptoms of intuition.
What intuition is is much simpler than all of these. It is much easier than trying to understand messages from somewhere ‘out there’.
Intuition is nothing more than the ability to listen to yourself. Without this basic ability, you cannot ever have useful intuition, in that you will never have anything you can turn to regularly and expect help in some form.
The act of listening to yourself is something which can (and should) be refined so that you always know what you are feeling about anything. Too often we bowl along through life never really knowing why we do things or even acknowledging how we feel about them. We are cut off from our feelings. We do not access our emotions as a way of regulating our actions. We react and do not think about it. We have become a non-reflective species, by and large.
Right now, how many people do you know of that do things without really knowing WHY they do them? Have you ever asked them what they feel about such actions? Have you ever asked yourself what you feel about actions you take without thought? Things like your job (which you might not like), or spending time with friends you don’t really get on with. How do you FEEL about such things? And, if you know that, and the feelings are not ones you like, then why do you keep doing them?
This simple level of listening to yourself is the first step. For many people, it is not a step they ever take. Yet it is the the most vital one to take. After that, then you have to start listening to yourself in other situations and find out how you feel there. Then you listen to yourself all the time. Pretty soon, you find that you aren’t just listening to you and you alone. You find that there’s something bigger out there that you’re plugged into and never knew about. Then you are using your intuition more than before.
It’s not tarot cards, it’s not voices, it’s not knowing the winner of the horse race ahead of time. It’s knowing you. Without that intimate knowledge, you can know nothing of any value. Without that knowledge, on whatever level, you cannot be intuitive for long.
