Life on Purpose

life-on-purpose_book-cover.jpgHave you ever wondered if your life was just something that happened to you? What would happen if you actually were able to take charge of it? Well, cease your wondering, because the answer is here. A new book by Brad Swift called (surprisingly enough, given the title of this piece, ‘Life on Purpose’), will give you the answers you need.

I had the chance to ask the author a few questions. The questions and his responses are below:

1 What are the most important qualities you consider a person should have in order to live a life on purpose.

First, people need to have the commitment and intention to clarify their life purpose and live true to it. As one of my favorite quotes from W. H. Murray says:

“Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiative and creativity there is one elementary truth, the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: That the moment one definitely commits oneself, then providence moves too.”

Then, it takes patience and steady and persistent action to allow for the process of your life purpose to shape your life to the point that at some point you’re able to look at your life and say with all honesty, “Wow, my life truly is a reflection of my life purpose.”This ‘purposeful patience and persistence’ is one of the fifteen Power Tools for Living On Purpose outlined in my new book, Life On Purpose: Six Passages to an Inspired Life.

2 What role would you say intuition plays in the process you outline?

A huge role! To me, intuition is one of the terms we use to point to being able to tap into that inner guidance of Spirit that we all have access to when we believe we do, and when we take the time to silence the many distractions around us. In Passage #4 of the 6 Passages is the Prime Your Passion Exercise that has allowed thousands of people to gain crystal clarity about their life purpose. Its really a tag team match using your logical left brain and your intuitive right brain to clarify your reason for being alive. It’s the intuition that allows us to tap into the heart of our true purpose which also allows us to tap into a wellspring of passion and enthusiasm which serves to fuel our effort to live true to our purpose.

3 What makes your approach so effective?

There are at least 3 things that combine synergistically to make the Life On Purpose Process so effective:

1. It’s spiritually based. This allows the person going through the Process to tap into an incredibly powerful energy source of us human beings. Like Jim Loehr & Tony Schwartz write in their book, The Power of Full Engagement: “The quantity of energy we have to spend at any given moment is a reflection of our physical capacity. Our motivation to spend what we have is largely a spiritual issue. Fundamentally, spiritual energy is a unique force for action in all dimensions of our lives. It is the most powerful source of our motivation, perseverance and directions Anything that ignites the human spirit serves to drive full engagement and to maximize performance in whatever mission we are on.” The Life On Purpose Process is highly effective at allowing people to tap into this all important spiritual energy.

2. Through the Life On Purpose Process, people not only clarify their true life purpose, but they also uncover the force that has been shaping much of their life and preventing them from living on purpose. I call this the fear-based Inherited Purpose. Many of the thousands of people who have gone through this Process have shared afterwards that uncovering their Inherited Purpose was one of the most transformational parts of the Process.

3. The Life On Purpose Process doesn’t only assist people in clarifying their life purpose, it then goes on to give them 15 simple yet highly effective tools for designing their life to be a reflection of their life purpose. So, its really not just a process, its a way of living that gives one the means to living a much more satisfying, fulfilling and joyful life. Its very practical in this way.

4 If you had to sum up in one sentence why people should do what you say, what would it be?

Im not sure I would. I’m only inviting people to try this approach to life on to see if it fits and if it enhances their life. I do know that its made an extraordinary difference in my life, in the life of my family members, and the many people that I’ve coached both individually and in groups. So, the reason I would encourage people to give the Life On Purpose Perspective and Process a try, would be because it has helped so many people to bring more purpose, passion and play to their life.

Besides, it’s very ‘customizable.’ As I say at the start of my book, try on this approach to life. Keep what fits for you, and disregard the rest. You can always come back later and try on the stuff that didn’t seem to fit the first time.

5 Who would you give as the best examples of people living their lives on purpose and how would you come to that decision?

Well, there are some of the obvious ones like Mother Teresa, Martin Luther King, Gandhi, people who lived their life on purpose and whose purpose continues to live beyond them. But there are other unsung heroes that are living purposeful lives that may never be as famous as these examples. One that comes to mind is Bo Lozoff of The Human Kindness Foundation. He was also the first person I wrote about when I created Project Purpose, which was the writing project I created to write and publish magazine articles about purposeful people. He’s made a tremendous difference in many people’s lives while living true to his own vision and purpose. By the way, it was Project Purpose that lead me to eventually founding Life On Purpose Institute, Inc.

There are many others people like Bo, that have done the inner work to become clear about their life purpose, and then committed to live true to it with their family members, friends and in their community. I remember Carol Hurt, another person from the Project Purpose Profile files, who was feeding hundreds of starving children from her family’s kitchen for years in her community in Houston. And then theres Chitra Bebroda, who went around Harlem saving as many of the ‘junkyard dogs’ that she could. Quiet people making a profound difference living and expressing their life purpose in service to others. While it all starts with our being our life purpose, invariably the more we allow it to shape our lives, the more well be called to be of service as well.
